Meet Levon Mierau : Painter of Layered Stories in Colour and Form

I am a contemporary abstract artist whose work is a conversation between layers, drawing inspiration from the elegance of design, the colours and lines of nature, and the quiet beauty of interior spaces. Influenced by years spent living in Europe and the light and landscapes of New Zealand, I blend elegance, texture, and emotion through mixed media. I think of my paintings as something to live with, works that bring a gentle presence into a space.

A Palette of Emotion and Structure: The Essence of Levon’s Abstract Art

Each painting begins with quiet gestures, soft lines, washes of paint, and loose forms. Colour anchors the work. It is where each piece begins and where it resolves, carrying memory, place, and feeling through every layer. Acrylic paint, pastels, collage, and pencil come together in a layered process, creating moments of calm, reflection, and connection. Grids and lines offer a subtle structure, while intuitive marks soften and shift the composition. A playful palette, with a signature use of pink, balances structure and intuition, leaving a quiet sense of sophistication and ease.

From Europe to Marlborough: Levon’s Artistic Journey

After my art studies, I spent several years living in Europe, immersed in a world of art, design, fashion, cuisine, and interiors. These influences settled in slowly and continue to shape the visual language of my work. Now based in Marlborough, New Zealand, the landscape and light find their way into this visual language. They soften the edges, open the space, and settle gently between the layers, an added presence rather than a shift. Since returning, I have held a successful solo exhibition and taken part in group shows, connecting with collectors and art lovers drawn to thoughtful, considered abstraction, a journey still unfolding.
